The A1025 is a link road in the New Town of Harlow.

Route

As part of the M11 J7a developments, the county council renumbered a section of the B183 and the new link road from Campions Roundabout to the new M11 junction as part of the A1025 [1].

The road then follows the A414 in a minor party of a multiplex between Gilden Way and Second Avenue. The road then diverges and heads west along Second Avenue, a typical New Town distributor in that it provides no access to residential areas but is liberally scattered with roundabouts.

Third Avenue, Harlow

At the third roundabout, in the town centre, the A1019 comes in from the north after which the A1025 moves onto Third Avenue. This is dual-carriageway past a retail park to the next roundabout. On this stretch there is a set of traffic lights on the eastbound carriageway only providing access to/from a car park. Now S2 once again, there is an unexpected set of traffic lights serving the estate to the south, followed immediately by a road turning off to the north. The road ends shortly afterwards at a roundabout on the A1169, which continues Third Avenue to the west. This roundabout is an unusual oval shape, suggesting future-proofing for a plan that never made it past the drawing board.

History

Harlow

The initial southern bypass for Old Harlow, Gilden Way, was opened on 4 November 1968 by Jim Kirby, a retired roadbuilder. The 1.35 mile road from London Road to Sheering Road cost £250,000. It opened as B183.

The Gilden Way extension from Marsh Lane to a new M11 J7A was opened to traffic on 10 June 2022. The formal opening event took place on the previous day. Gilden Way (formerly B183) was also widened to D3 from the London Road roundabout to Marsh Lane. Contractor was Graham Construction, scheme cost £76 million.
