The Northumberland incarnation of the A1056 is a new link road connecting the new routes of two main roads, the A1 and A19.
It starts at the grade-separated junction 79 on the A1 Wideopen bypass. The road heading south from here, the B1318, is one of the previous routes of the A1, although not the original — which is met at the next roundabout, where we turn left onto the Great North Road. At the following roundabout, some 400 m further on, at the southern edge of Wideopen, we bear right, leaving the B1318 to continuing its way along the ex-A1.
The A1056 turns through a gentle right-hand bend before straightening out and becoming Sandy Lane (a part of the former B1318, now overlain by our route's alignment). We pass industrial premises to the north and a golf course to the south before crossing the A189 at a large roundabout. Now on 1970s new-build we cross the East Coast Main Line and continue east through Killingworth, a planned town started in the 1960s but not an official New Town. The B1505 (on the original line of the A189) is crossed at the next roundabout.
We continue as a new-town artery with no access to adjoining properties. At times it becomes clear that this road was planned as D2 but only the westbound carriageway has been built. The next roundabout provides access into the town centre, while we continue east across open country to end at a diamond interchange with the A19 (yet another former route of the A1).
