The C116n is really two routes that have been brought together with a single number. It starts on the A702 just south of Moniaive, quickly crossing the Castlefairn Water on Blackston Bridge, and turns east to follow the south bank of the Cairn Water, which is crossed by Kirkland Bridge to meet the B729 at Kirkland. There is then a lengthy spur, which starts on the south side of Kirkland Bridge and heads south east down the valley. The route includes the short spur across Crossford Bridge to meet the B729 again, but otherwise continues to Snade. Here it turns to climb away from the river, crossing the end of the ridge to reach the C37n at the crossroads at Kenmore.
