The C90a starts on the B7076 at Castlemilk and heads west, crossing the long abandoned line of the old A74 and then crosses the B723. Heading south west now, the route runs to the skewed crossroads at Shawhead, where it turns right and drops down to meet the C92a at Birkshaw.
