This article is about the Class III road numbered C97a maintained by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The C97a starts on the B7076 near Muirhousehead and heads north east along Breckenry Road. This road seems to have been substantially upgraded, with bends and junctions reprogiled in 2009 or 2010, although there is no obvious reason why. There is even a short bypass at Lammonbie to avoid an old T Junction, with the route emerging at a TOTSO on the B723 above Claydaubing Bridge. A possible reason for the improvements could be to carry forestry and timber traffic from further north and east on the B723, as the C97a acts as a bypass for Lockerbie, providing more direct access to the motorway.
