This article is about the Class III road numbered C51w maintained by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
For other roads numbered C51, see C51.
For other roads numbered C51, see C51.
The C51w follows the old, pre-bypass, line of the A75 from Spittal south in to Creetown. The southern end of the old main road is now an extension of the C49w, which previously met the A75 at the High Street.
The numbering of this route is curious. It carries a 'w' prefix, normally used for routes in Wigtownshire, despite being wholly in Kirkcudbrightshire, which roads normally carry an 's' suffix. The C49w which it meets in Creetown also carries the 'w' suffix, and is presumably the older of the two routes, so it can be presumed that 'error' was carried over.
