The C30a starts on the B7020 a little to the north of Dalton and heads north west at first, climbing a little up the flank of Ronalds Hill. It reaches a T junction below the summit and turns left, dipping to cross the Dalton Burn as it meanders westwards to the former district boundary at Birset. The road continues a little further to reach the A75.
