The C78a starts on the A7 at Sorbie and heads south west, following the narrow pass of Sorbie Hass between Wrae Hill and Bauchle Hill. It then skirts round below Golf Hill to reach Burnfoot, where it turns sharply south to cross the bridge over the River Esk, and so reach the B709.
