For other roads numbered C49, see C49.
The C49w starts at the south end of the A75 Creetown Bypass and heads into the town along the old route of the main road. It then turns right onto the High Street, winding through to find Chain Road which follows the Moneypool Burn out of town and upstream. The road climbs steadily through the valley alongside the old railway line until it reaches the site of the former Gatehouse of Fleet Station near New Rusko. Here the C49w ends at the end of the B796, which drops down into Gatehouse.
The numbering of this road is curious, as it has a 'w' suffix which is normally associated with Wigtownshire roads. However, the route lies wholly within Kirkcudbrightshire, and remained within the area covered by the Stewartry District Council, which normally carry 's' suffixes. It is not clear why this number has been used - there is a C49s elsewhere.
