For other roads numbered C49, see C49.
The C49a is a lengthy route which starts on the A75 near Ladyfield and heads north east, crossing the B7020 and the B723 to reach the small village of Brydekirk. Dropping down the main street, the route crosses the bridge over the River Annan, and then turns sharp left to climb the steep bank above the river. The roadsides are lined with trees as the route continues north east to reach the B722 just short of the Eaglesfield Interchange on the A74(M).
