Route outline (key)
B705 Mauchline – Auchinleck
This article is about the current B705 in Ayrshire.
For the original B705 south west of Edinburgh, see B705 (Leadburn - Blyth Bridge)
.

The B705 is a secondary route in East Ayrshire linking Catrine with the A76 in either direction.

Route

The route starts at a fork junction by the war memorial on the A76 on the southern edge of Mauchline. It heads southeast along Catrine Road, passing modern bungalows, most of which are hidden behind hedges, and soon enters open country. On reaching Ballochmile Golf Club the road turns sharply left and makes a long detour to the north, passing a new housing estate, before running alongside a band of woodland. After a long right hander, it zigzags down into the valley of the Burn o'Need (if the road had remained straight it would have needed a steep hill here). At the bottom, the burn is crossed on Shellies Bridge, with the route entering Catrine on the south side. It then follows the long, straight, Mauchline Road between older council houses on the left, and a modern estate on the right , which backs onto the main road. At the end of the straight, a sharp left hander leads onto Ballochmyle Street.

Now running alongside the River Ayr, the route passes some larger houses and open spaces before crossing Mill Square to enter the town centre on St Germain Street. There are a few shops and businesses here, before the meandering river is crossed on Catrine Bridge. On the far side the B713 comes in from the right and the B705 is now the dominant partner in a short multiplex along Townhead as it climbs through the trees and out of town. A right turn crosses some parkland into a large housing estate, and soon after the B713 turns off to the left on the edge of open country. The B705 continues southeastwards across the fields, winding around a couple of hills before finding a long climbing straight through a wood to enter Auchinleck. Heading south along the wide, but traffic-calmed Sorn Road, the end of the route is reached at a mini-roundabout on the B7083 (the pre-bypass A76).

History

The B705 number was reused for this previously unclassified route in the late 1920s. Although it does connect Mauchline, Catrine and Auchinleck, it takes a meandering route and the A76 route is almost certainly faster for most journeys today, let alone a century ago when most journeys were by foot, bike or horse. There has only been one notable change to the route over the years, and that is in Catrine, where the B705 used to have to detour to the south and navigate three sides of Mill Square, a large mill building blocking the direct route across. This was removed in the late 1960s and the route straightened on its current line.
