B783 Link in East Kilbride
This article is about the current B783 in Lanarkshire.
For the former B783 in Ayrshire, see B783 (Dalry - Kilbirnie)
.

The B783 is a short link road in East Kilbride which passes to the north of the old village centre.

The route starts at a roundabout on the B761 West Mains Road and heads north along East Mains Road, which runs past a school and into trees. The trees have been planted to disguise a cutting, giving a rural feel, seemingly some distance from any urban sprawl. The route slows curves round to the right to come within view of houses once more. The carriageways split as the route approaches a long, thin roundabout, where an unclassified D2 road heads north. The next roundabout is also long and thin, suggesting that something more was planned for this road, although the traffic islands are set the wrong way for the B783 to be dualled and grade-separated. Continuing east past a cemetery and through more woodland, the route goes over the original route of the A749, now closed to vehicles, then crosses a dismantled railway line just afterwards. After a couple more junctions leading into the adjacent housing estates, the B783 reaches its end at the Whirlies Roundabout, where it meets the A725 eastern bypass and the present route of the A749.

History

The current B783 was constructed as a new route in the New Town in the late 1950s. The 1959 OS One Inch Sheet shows the western part of the route as under construction / complete, while the final section through to Whirlies Roundabout is not shown. However, the 1961 OS 1:2500 sheet showing the junction with the B761 gives the B783 number to East Mains Road, suggesting that it was complete and open as a through route.

An amended OpenStreetMap trace for this route awaits uploading to the SABRE Wiki.
