For the original B728 in Kirkcudbrightshire, see B728 (Kirkcudbright).
North Ayrshire Council list the B728 as currently being Sorbie Road and South Beach Road in Ardrossan. This route was first indicated as being a B road on the Ten Mile Map in 1932, although as yet only a couple of maps showing its number have been found. The earliest is an officially amended version of an MOT map dating from the late 1920s, and the newest is the 1971 edition of the OS 1:10,000 sheet. Newer maps have shown the route as an un-numbered B road, but it is some years since this was the case. However, if the council list is accurate, this route still exists despite no longer being signed or marked on any maps.
The route is a straightforward link between traffic lights on the A738 (former A78) down to the B780 (former A738) on the sea front. At the traffic lights, the route is signed only for the station and park and ride, and to make matters worse, there is a TOTSO half way along where the B728 turns right from Sorbie Road into South Beach Road. It then crosses the railway on a bridge next to the station, before quickly coming to an end looking out across the Firth of Clyde.
