For the current B739 near Prestwick in Ayrshire, see B739.
For the original B739 further south in the same county, see B739 (Carrick).
The B739 was first indicated as being a B road on the Ten Mile Map in 1932, although as yet only one map showing its number has been found. This is an officially amended version of an MOT map dating from the late 1920s. The route followed the original line of the A78 along High Road in Stevenston, that route having been diverted onto Glencairn Street, providing a sort of bypass to the town centre, although it quickly became built up with suburban housing. At the opposite end, the B739 met the A738 at what was originally a TOTSO type junction on the A78.
The route is marked as a B road throughout the 1930s, but by 1944 it is no longer shown, presumably meaning that it became unclassified during the war. Today it is a quiet side road with two one-way sections for westbound traffic, presumably to prevent rat-running into the town centre. The routes at either end have also changed, the A78 was moved further out of town leading to the A738 moving onto the former A78 route and the original A738 through the town centre is now the B780.
