The B747 is a short link road to the east of Ayr town centre. It starts at traffic lights on the A719 (former B746) Whitletts Road, and heads south along the almost dead straight Craigie Road, passing the racecourse, Craigie Park and the grounds of Ayr College. Most of the southern part of the route is lined with semi detached housing, with Craigie Road then snaking through an S bend to end at a roundabout on the A79 John Street.
Originally the B747 continued ahead along Station Road to cross the River Ayr and end by the station on the A70 Holmston Road. This section has now been taken over by the re-routed A79.
The 1922 MOT Road List defines this route as: Ayr (Wallacetown Bye-Pass)
