The B748 is a short route which runs along the south bank of the River Ayr from Ayrs town centre to the mouth of the river. As originally classified in 1922, it was a counterpart to the B746 which ran on the north bank but was declassified early on. Although the route was undoubtedly classified to serve what would have been a bustling harbour a century ago, the area south of the river has almost entirely been redeveloped, while the north side of the river retains some large industrial sites around the dock.
Maps claim that the B748 starts on the A719 (former A77) immediately to the south of New Bridge and heads west along South Harbour Street. However, this road is eastbound only and is, in practice, part of the A719 one-way system. The B748 only appears for real at a mini-roundabout one block west. It then continues west along the river bank. After passing a corner of the citadel wall the route runs through a district of modern harbourside flats. Eventually South Harbour Street bends to the left near the mouth of the river. The B748 ends here and the road ahead is unclassified.
