For the current B714 in Ayrshire, see B714.
For the original B714, now part of the A721, see B714 (Carnwath - Kirkdean).
The former B714 in Saltcoats followed a variety of related routes over the years, always meeting the A738 at either end. The start point of the route remained the same throughout its existence, being the junction of Nineyard Street and Vernon Street at the eastern end of the town centre. As initially classified in the mid 1920s, the route then headed west along Vernon Street and Manse Street to meet the A738 again at the junction with Hamilton Street, now a roundabout. This incarnation of the route survived unchanged until at least 1947.
By 1956, however, the B714 and A738 had swapped routes through Saltcoats, resulting in the B714 now initially heading south on Nineyard Street, before turning west along Dockhead Street and Hamilton Street to meet the A738 again at the same junction as before. This routing was, however, very short lived because a decade later in 1966 the B714 had been moved out to the coast and now followed a relatively new road across the reclaimed land of The Braes. Instead of turning right onto Dockhead Street, it therefore continued along Hill Street, then followed The Braes around the back of the bay. Winton Circus and Montgomerie Crescent then formed the western part of the route along the coast to meet the A738, South Crescent Road, at the junction by the (newer) car park.
