For the current B973 at Blackburn, see B973.
The original route of the B973 started on the B970 (now A939) at Colnabaichin Bridge east of Corgarff Castle and headed east. For the most part, it followed the River Don downstream through Upper Strathdon, meandering through the scattered communities of Strathdon village to reach the A97 at Deskry Bridge. Today both terminal junctions are TOTSOs, and the geometry suggests that they always were.
At some point between 1988 and 1993, following a campaign by the local Community Council who felt their area merited an A road, this route was incorporated into an extended A944, after a lengthy multiplex with the A97. However, the road still feels like a pleasant rural B road, passing through some stunning Aberdeenshire countryside along the way.
