This article is about the former B996 in Aberdeenshire.
For the current B996 through Kinross, see B996
(former B996) south of Hatton of Fintray
The original route of the B996, as classified in 1922, was a fairly short B-road in east Aberdeenshire.
Leaving the A96 (present B973) in Blackburn the road headed north over the River Don into Hatton of Fintray. Leaving the river behind it zigzagged to the east to end on the A947 at Elrick, to the south of Newmachar.
At some point in the mid-1930s the route was renumbered as part of an extended B979, albeit with a multiplex through Hatton of Fintray where the B977 takes priority.
