The original route of the B996, as classified in 1922, was a fairly short B-road in east Aberdeenshire. It started on the A96 (present B973) in Blackburn and headed north over the River Don into Hatton of Fintray. Leaving the river behind it zigzagged as it crossed the hills to the north east and ended on the A947 at Elrick, to the south of Newmachar.
In 1934 the route was mostly renumbered as part of an extended B979, albeit with a multiplex through Hatton of Fintray where the B977 takes priority.
The 1922 MOT Road List defines this route as: Blackburn - Summerhill
An official document from 16-5-1934 details the following changes:
This route to be renumbered as follows:- (a) Blackburn-Hatton of Fintray ... B979. (b) Hatton of Fintray-Garthy ... B977. (c) Garthy - S. Of Summerhill ... B979.
