The current B985 provides a link between the B9077 in the south of Aberdeen, towards the new Aberdeen South Harbour via the industrial areas of West Tullos and Altens.
The route starts at the roundabout with the B9077 south of the King George VI Bridge before following West Tullos Road, a dual carriageway, up the hill. A roundabout with Abbotswell Road provides a link road to Torry, and to Kincorth in the other direction. The dual carriageway then continues until it meets the A956 Wellington Road at a roundabout. The B985 then continues straight ahead as a single carriageway through the Altens industrial estate, passing through several roundabouts before twisting round a couple of corners to meet the unclassified Coast Road.
The road was classified in 2020 following a review of principal and secondary routes in Aberdeen; previously both West Tullos Road and Hareness Road were unclassified.
