The original route of the B909 was a near-straight 590-metre run SSE from the A908 at Keilarsbrae to the site of the Gaberston turnpike on the A907 Clackmannan Road. However, this was severed by the re-opening in 2008 of the Alloa to Kincardine railway line and the closure of the Hilton Road level crossing. To compensate for this closure, a new road was built, including a new bridge over the railway and a new roundabout at the southern end. The northernmost 50 or so metres, connecting to the Carsebridge Roundabout on the A908 remain unchanged.
The present route follows a more sinuous south-easterly route from the Carsebridge roundabout to a new bridge over the railway near the site of the former Whinhill Pit and the new Parkmill roundabout junction with a realigned A907 some 500 m closer to Clackmannan than the old turning. The new road is a wide S2 throughout, but instead of the more normal space on the outside of the carriageways, the extra width is taken up by a hatched out centre strip, varying slightly in width, and with dashed edges.
