The B989 was allocated to Hutcheon Street in north Aberdeen. It started on the B986 Berryden Road and headed east, crossing the then-A96 George Street before ending on the A946 (the current route of the A96) Causewayend. There have been a lot of changes along the route over the last century. Hutcheon Street itself still follows the same course, but today there is a large derelict industrial site on the south side of the western portion of the route, while the eastern portion is dominated by two massive 1960s tower blocks.
The road has been part of a rerouted A944 since the late 1980s.
The 1922 MOT Road List defines this route as: Aberdeen (Hutcheon Street)
