The B40 starts on the B42 at a fork junction just north of the A7 in Ballabeg. It heads north east, quickly leaving the village behind as it climbs steadily up and over the hill. A number of properties are scattered along the roadside between fields, but the route is otherwise largely unremarkable. Generally wide enough for two cars to squeeze past, it runs between grassy banks before dipping down to end on the B41 at Grenaby.
