This article is about the original B30 from Ballagawne to Foxdale. For the current B30 west of St Marks, see B30 (Isle of Man).
The A36, former B30, climbing above Scard
The original B30 started on the old A5 line at a crossroads, since converted to Ballagawne Roundabout. It then headed north, climbing past Ballagawne village, eventually reaching the Round Table junction, where it crossed the B21. The route then curved around the northern slopes of South Barrule to reach the original line of the A4 south of Foxdale. The route started opposite the B23, begging the question of why that route wasn't extended north. This situation has, however, been perpetuated, with the A36 now starting opposite the end of the A29, the renumbering taking place before 1963.
The route wasn't included in the first batch of classified routes, but had been added by 1929 when it is depicted on the Michelin Map. The route description from 1937 is rather vague, but the indicated mileage of 8.4 miles appears to tally with that of the current A36.
The Manx Government Circular 1814 of 17/08/1937 defines this route as: South Barrule, via Slough
