The C1056 is the southern end of what was previously entirely the C1052. The reasons behind this renumbering are not clear, but there is no apparent logic to it. It starts on the B9154 (former A9) at Craggie, Daviot, and runs roughly parallel to the B851 to the north of the River Nairn, meeting the C1052 end on at a T junction with a U road above the Clava Railway Viaduct.
