The C1148 follows the former line of the A9 down the hill into Helmsdale, and across Telfords Helmsdale Bridge. It starts towards the top of the hill and drops down alongside the railway line, with the C1046 doubling back to the south through West Helmsdale and Gartymore. After crossing over the railway, it winds more steeply down to the old stone bridge, and then quickly comes to an end at a mini roundabout on the A897.
