The B5317 number was allocated to Edgerton Street and Dawson Street on the west side of Manchester city centre. It was not part of the original 1922 allocation, and its location deep inside the urban area means that mapping evidence is generally unhelpful, though it does appear to have been allocated before World War 2. Even on OS One Inch Seventh Series sheets, the road is shown as a B-road, but with no number shown.
It became part of the A57 in the late 1960s, presumably when the construction of the A57(M) Mancunian Way diverted that road through the city centre.
